Former Lancaster County Commissioner Kathy Campbell announced Wednesday she will run for the Legislature next year, seeking the seat now held by Ron Raikes.

Raikes, who represents District 25 — east Lincoln and part of the county — cannot run again because of term limits.

Campbell was a Lancaster County Commissioner for 16 years, first elected in 1986. She served twice as chairwoman of the board for a total of five years.

She is executive vice president of the Cedars Home for Children Foundation.

Campbell is also active on several boards: vice chairwoman of the Lincoln Electric System Board; on the Leadership Lincoln Board of Directors; and a member of the BryanLGH Medical Center Board of Trustees.

In 2005, Campbell was co-chair of the Lincoln Public Schools Student Housing Task Force, which led to her co-chairing the passage of the largest school bond issue in Lincoln history — $250 million — for building renovations and new schools with no tax rate increase, according to the news release announcing her candidacy.

Campbell and her husband, Dick, and other family members operate Campbell’s Nurseries.

She will make a formal announcement later in the year, according to the news release.

Raikes is one of 15 senators unable to seek another term because of a constitutional amendment limiting senators to two four-year terms in a row.
